A few changes around here

I don't know if you have noticed but there have been a few changes at Simply Fit Mama. I enlisted my amazing web faerie to make some magic happen to give this blog a little summer cleaning ( I missed the spring cleaning boat). And in the blink of an eye she had everything that I needed done because she's rad like that.

Here are some of the changes:

  • There are two new categories on the navigation bar at the top "Recipes" and "Menu Plans". You will be able to click on either word and the page has all the recipes or all the menu plans from this blog. Yippee!!

  • At the bottom of every post right next to the comments there is a "Print Friendly" button that will enable you to print that post if you would like. This should come in handy for printing recipes. You also have the option once you click that button to delete what you don't want from the post like pictures or my rambling, to save printer ink.

  • The rest of the changes are cosmetic but I do hope you enjoy the refreshed look of this site.

And just in case you are interested in new blog designs or need a refreshed look for your current blog take a look at Carrie from Sweet Faerie Designs. I think she is awesome and highly recommend her! I also know her in real life and she is a peach. She makes all my crazy ideas become a reality.
Thank you, Carrie!

She Runs LA Powered by Nike and Giveaway

Nike will be hosting their first digital 10k race in Los Angeles and surrounding areas on April 27th starting at 4p.m. and ending on April 28th at 4 p.m. You have that 24 hour time period to run a 10k and then upload it to the nike+ website. They just announced that Mike Posner will be the performer for this event! There will also be guest appearances of Nike athletes and other fun things. Sounds like a fun post run bash Hollywood style!

The best part of this event is that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a program called Students Run LA. This is their awesome mission statement: The mission of Students Run LA is to challenge at-risk secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the Honda LA Marathon.
Nike has offered 50 free passes for my readers to participate in this fun event!! If you would like a free pass for this event please email me: simplyfitmama@gmail.com for the details.

SimpleNutrition at Vons and Giveaway!

Source
I think it's great that a lot of conventional stores are starting to come on board to try and make shopping for nutritious food easier. It can be overwhelming trying to make good food choices with all the products that are offered especially if you are at the store with fidgety toddlers wanting to go home.

Vons has started a new program at their store that is called SimpleNutrition. And it is exactly what the title leads you to assume. Simple. If you are looking for Organic foods they have a green label that sticks out on the shelves that let's you know quickly that it is an organic product. If you are looking for low sodium items the green SimpleNutrition tags lead you to the low sodium items quickly.

Vons started this program around the middle of February and they are planning to expand this program throughout 2011. One of the features Vons plans to add to the SimpleNutrition program is a personalized tool online that will help shoppers find healthier options for products they already buy. I think this tool sounds great and I will be interested to see it once they have it up and running.

They already have a whole new section on their website that includes an overview of this program, recipes and money saving tips.

SimpleNutrition labels are meant to give you a quick view of the key health benefits of healthier products. You will still need to check the label for specific nutritional information. The labels should help keep you away from all the processed, sugary and high in fat foods, which is a good thing!

As a thank you for reviewing the new SimpleNutrition program Vons sent me two $25 gift cards and I would like to give them away to two readers!

**To enter the giveaway please leave a comment at the end of this post. The giveaway will end Monday evening at 11:59 p.m. (PST). There will be two winners ($25 each) picked randomly and announced on Tuesday morning. The gift cards can be used at the following Safeway Company stores: Safeway, Vons, Pavillions, Genuardi's, Dominick's, Carrs and Randalls.

30 Day Whole Foods Challenge Recap

Whole Foods Market had a grand opening in Huntington Beach that I was able to attend in October.  Here is a little recap of my thoughts and why I decided to challenge myself to shop at Whole Foods for 30 days.
Now if you are reading this and thinking; "Yeah, I love Whole Foods and it would be great to shop there but I just can't afford it." You're in good company because I was actually thinking the same thing during the tour but then I realized that I have never given Whole Foods a fair chance. I've bought into all the hype about the store being too pricey without really shopping there on a regular basis. During the tour I fell in love with everything that Whole Foods stands for. Their food principles and visions are directly in line with what I believe about food.
The challenge:

Is it possible to shop at Whole Foods and stay within your normal grocery budget?

Goals:
  • shop at Whole Foods Market for the month of November
  • stay within my normal grocery budget
  • take one or two of their classes at the Health Starts Here desk
  • of course share my menu plans that I create using the food offered at their store
I tried to stay within my goals but was unable to attend a class at the Health Starts Here desk. November was a busy month filled with a little traveling, a school play and Thanksgiving. I was just happy to make to the grocery store each week!

I'm not even sure where to start but I suppose I will start with my numbers and disclaimers. My normal grocery budget for the month is around $650.00 for our family of four. I shop weekly and average $162 per week. I buy organic and/or grass-fed meat. Organic milk, juice, butter, eggs and yogurt. I only buy the "dirty dozen" organic for produce.

For the month of November I ended up shopping only 3 of the 4 weeks at Whole Foods exclusively. The third week was hard because it was Thanksgiving week and I shopped both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods for that week. My total for that week was abnormally high because of the holiday so I am not including that week into the calculations.

Whole Foods Market weekly totals:

  • $166.04 --> Menu plan for this trip
  • $127.79--> I didn't plan this week because we were out of town, I just winged it. :)
  • $123.78--> Menu plan for this trip
  • Total: $417.61

As you can see by the numbers I was right in line with my budget. Actually I was a little under budget I still had about $230 left to spend (which is right around what I spent on Thanksgiving week).

I bought the majority of what I normally buy during a week so that I could have a good comparison of cost. I mainly bought Whole Foods 365 brand because other brands offered were considerably higher priced than I normally spend. I liked the 365 brand, it actually made the shopping a little easier because I just started looking for that label instead of trying to pick out of the vast options available.

My first week at Whole Foods was hard. I felt a little overwhelmed, their stores are huge. I went on a Saturday which I knew it would be busy but I needed to shop without the distraction of kids for the first week. I came home and felt like I wanted to throw in the towel on this challenge.

I did love that they have butchers there. It was very nice to order exactly the amount of meat I needed, which helped me save money and waste less. For example I needed two Italian sausages for the spaghetti squash marinara and Italian sausage recipe normally I would have to buy a pack of four. Plus the recipe instructs you to remove the sausage from the casing so I decided to get the ground Italian sausage without any casing to skip that step. The guy at the counter was super helpful I told him I needed two links worth of ground sausage (girl measurements), he grabbed two linked sausages weighed them and then weighed out the same amount in ground. Smart.

Since it seems that most grocery stores have backed away from having butchers I would have never had this kind of service anywhere else. It was nice. The downside to the butcher was that my meat was wrapped in butcher paper and then stored in my fridge. By the end of my week some of the meat didn't look as fresh. I actually thought I lost a couple pork chops. I'm not sure if this means you just need to get the meat you will use in a day or two and then go back for the rest at the end of the week. Hmm...I don't plan on shopping more than once a week. But the meat was delicious so it may be worth the extra trip.

By the second week I felt a little better in the store. I started to learn how the layout worked and was able to navigate easier. By the third week it was much easier to shop there. The second and third week I made sure to go during the morning hours which seem to be a great time with very little foot traffic. My kiddos love shopping at whole foods because of all the yummy samples, every corner you turn there are samples.

Some of the tricks I learned to stay on budget at Whole Foods Market:

Buying from the bulk bins: not just to buy a large amount but to by small amounts, just enough for a recipe. I had to buy cinnamon sticks for the turkey stew recipe normally a jar would cost 4-8 dollars. I was able to buy two sticks for 8 cents in the bulk area. That is a huge savings!

Case discount: for anything in their store. This is a great deal! I have seen case discounts for wine (they offer this too) but not for everything else. This worked out nicely since I buy my husband Cliff bars every week so I bought a case instead of individual bars and received 10% off the price.

"Off the hook" sales: this is their seafood sale items. They run Friday through Monday. A great way to get good seafood at it's lowest price.

Butcher buys: this is their butcher deals and it's what I planned my meals around. Every Thursday the flier is updated.

Cheese department: You know when you need a specialty cheese and you go over to the area and start picking up chunks of cheese and checking the back for the smallest and lowest priced one. Well you don't need to do this you can just hand a chunk to the cheese clerk and ask them to cut you the amount you need; no more no less. This makes trying a new cheese or recipe less expensive because you buy only what you need.

Three wishes wine and 365 wine: these are Whole Foods budget friendly wine labels. Three wishes is $1.99 a bottle! 365 is under $5 and price varies. There is also an in house sommelier to help you pick which wine will go better with your food, even if you are just choosing from the budget friendly labels.

"Whole Deal" guide: this is a great guide you can pick up right outside their stores. They come out once a month. This guide has great budget friendly recipes and spotlights new items in their store. It also has a bunch of store coupons.

If you have an iphone you can download The Whole Foods Market apps. They have a couple the two I downloaded were the Huntington beach app and the Whole Foods Market recipes. The Huntington beach app has weekly deals and coupons they even had a $10 coupon available! Whole Foods Market recipe app is fun because you can type in what you have on hand and it will search their database for recipes that match up. It will also generate a grocery list from those recipes. Both apps are free.

You can also go to the Whole Foods Market website and check your location for weekly specials and coupons. You can even download their Whole Deals flier which has great budget friendly recipes and a bunch of store coupons.

So in the end I really thought that shopping at Whole Foods Market was pretty budget friendly more than I thought it would be. I plan to shop at Whole Foods more often. I probably won't shop there exclusively because I still have an active love affair with Trader Joe's. I can't go cold turkey. :)

The Real Food Diet Cookbook review and GIVEAWAY

I'm not a big fan of diet books in general and when I was asked to review this new "diet" book I was hesitant. I took a look at Dr. Axe's website and I was intrigued and my hesitation dissolved. I really found his website overflowing with sound health and nutritional advice. This book is less of a diet book and more of a nourishing your health through food book. The last week and a half I have been trying new recipes from this book.

The Real Food Diet Cookbook by Dr. Josh Axe

The beginning of the cookbook is filled with great nutritional advice. Dr. Axe breaks down nutrition into easy to digest information:
  • real vs. fake food
  • explanation of nutrient density
  • the real food pyramid vs. the standard food pyramid
  • five best real foods
  • five worst fake foods
  • a great explanation of sugars, fats and oils
  • healthiest milk and dairy
  • cooking tips
  • label reading
  • cooking equipment
  • glycemic load --eat this not that section is good
My favorite statement in the whole book is this:

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
  • Stop counting calories.
  • Stop counting fat.
  • Stop counting carbs.
  • Stop measuring every last portion on your mini-scale.
  • Start focusing on eating quality food.
If you are just starting out on your real food / whole food journey then this would be a good book to get you started, mainly because of the first part of the book.

If you have been eating with a real food / whole food concept for a while then some of this information will be stuff you already know.

Another nice feature of this cookbook is that the majority of the recipes had color pictures to accompany them. I liked that.

Here are a few of the recipes I have tried:

Chai
This was a nice warm fall drink that uses almond milk. I enjoyed it and my kids did too. I plan to give this  to them  after they come in from playing in the chilly fall weather.

Almond Berry Cereal
I had high hopes for this cereal because it looked soo good but I didn't really like it. It had a paste like consistency  which was not very appealing. I still ate about half of it because I was hungry and didn't want to waste the food,  it was a very filling breakfast. I loved the coconut milk which I have never had before. The coconut milk was nice and creamy. Because of this recipe I plan on trying coconut milk in other ways.

Spinach Salad with Spiced Nuts
I actually made this salad for Thanksgiving. It was delicious and wonderful combination of flavors.  Since I had all the ingredients on hand I ended up making it a couple time during the weekend. It was good!

This morning I threw all the ingredients in the crock pot for the Crockpot Turkey Stew from  Dr. Axe's cookbook. I have just a little bit of turkey leftover so I thought I would give this recipe a try.

Crockpot Turkey Stew
*recipe provided with permission from author.

2 lbs. boneless, skinless turkey (breast thighs, legs, etc.)
1 med. leek, sliced
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 tsp. thyme leaves
1 tsp. oregano leaves
1 tsp. Italian seasoning
1 c. winter squash, peeled and cubed
1 med. carrot, chopped
1 cinnamon stick
1 16 oz. can organic tomatoes
1 32 oz carton of chicken/turkey/veggie broth or water
  • Place turkey, leeks, celery and spices into crock pot. Turn on high and saute until leeks become translucent. (I did this in a skillet on the stove)
  • Add squash, carrots, cinnamon stick, tomatoes, water or stock and simmer covered for 2-3 hours on medium or 6-8 hours on low.
  • Remove cinnamon stick just prior to serving.
The turkey stew was yummy. The winter squash was a nice addition and the cinnamon stick made the house and stew smell delicious. The cinnamon didn't read sweet it actually added a little kick. The kiddos loved it probably because it smelled delicious. My husband did not like it but I thought it was good.

Spaghetti Squash Marinara with Italian Sausage | Salad | Fresh Bread

This dinner was a hit at our house. I have made spaghetti squash once or twice but for some reason never made it again. Weird, right? It's good and easy to make and my mind was on overdrive thinking of all the things I could make with spaghetti squash. I used a recipe from Whole Foods "the whole deal" news letter; they also have it posted on their website: here.

Spaghetti Squash Marinara with Italian Sausage
adapted by: Simply Fit Mama

  • 1 (3 1/2 lb.) spaghetti squash, halved and seeded
  • 2 links fresh Italian pork sausage, removed from casings--You could easily leave this out and make it vegetarian/vegan.
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped yellow onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup fresh mushrooms, chopped--I didn't have any on hand but next time I make it I will add the mushrooms.
  • 1 jar prepared pasta sauce--I used 365 organic three cheese marinara
  • Sea salt and fresh cracked pepper, to taste
Preheat oven to 375°F. Arrange squash in dish, cut sides down. Pour 1/2 cup water into the dish and bake until just tender, 30 to 35 minutes. Rake with a fork to remove flesh in strands. --When you pull this out of the oven leave it cut side down until you're ready to serve, then rake with fork to make the strands,  this will ensure that the squash stays warm.

Meanwhile, heat a skillet over medium heat and cook sausage, breaking into smaller pieces, until almost done, about 5 minutes. Add onion and cook until soft. Next add mushrooms and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. Add garlic cook for a minute then add pasta sauce and simmer 2 to 3 minutes. Keep warm.

Salad
I tossed together some organic mixed baby greens with Trader Joe's Caesar dressing, a squeeze of half a fresh lemon, 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese and cracked pepper.

Fresh Bread
I made the whole grain artisan free-form loaf from this book. It was delicious!

Wednesday
Maple Glazed Pork Chops | Roasted Sweet Potatoes | Haricots Verts

Thursday
Easy Chili | Salad | Cornbread

Friday
Kale and White Bean Soup | Fresh Bread

Happy Monday!

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I know we did!

Exciting things ahead this week at Simply Fit Mama.

If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed that on Thursday I spent some time at Whole Foods doing a little research for the 30 day challenge. Whole Foods was kind enough to give me an insiders look at all the deals and steals that they run in their store. This week I will share those tips with you!!

Today is the official start of my 30 day Whole Foods challenge. Unofficially I did my grocery shopping on Saturday; since the store is new to me I did not want to have a restriction on time or bring the kiddos because it is easier to shop alone. Not to say I don't love shopping with the kiddos, for the most part I do, just not at a new store trying to stay within my budget.

New fitness goals. Upcoming races.

Menu plan for this week.
